this little one eats

I have been eagerly anticipating weaning Ava and there is no doubt that she is ready for food. For the past few weeks she has been intensely fascinated in me eating or drinking anything, often making mock chewing motions and reaching her hand out towards whatever I'm munching on.

Although I know that there isn't some kind of magical clock inside her that goes "ding!" at six months and makes her miraculously ready to wean, but I decided to wait until more or less exactly six months anyway, despite the fact that she was clearly ready to eat. For the past month or so I have been reading up on Baby Led Weaning and after a lengthy email from a friend extolling the virtues of this method, I was convinced it sounded right for us.

For those not in the know {and I had no idea until recently} baby led weaning is where you skip the whole puréeing and spoon feeding stage and just jump straight in to giving your child proper food {i.e. not puréed}. The idea is that you give them finger food for them to explore {read: smush} and discover {read: throw}. It sounds messy and it sounds fun and it appeals to the inner hippy/earth mum in me. It might not work - my own mum is convinced Ava will be a "choker" as I was - but I'm going to give it a try.

I'll keep you posted on our progress.

Wish us {messy} luck!
